Tips for breeding pigs in the summer

Summer is coming. Many pig farmers will find that pregnant sows will appear to pant and not eat; lactating sows will also appear similar. Is it a disease? The appearance of these symptoms is not always caused by disease, but may also be related to the temperature.

Tips for breeding pigs in the summer

  • Temperature

Now the temperature rises quickly in many areas, suddenly rose to more than 30 degrees, the temperature in the pigsty is also 31-32 ℃. For this situation, you need to pay special attention. Because the best temperature of the pregnant sow house is 20-25 ℃; lactating sow house is the same, 22 ℃ is the most suitable temperature. If the temperature rises to 28°C or higher, the pigs are likely to have health problems.

Don't ignore the small number of pigs with problems! Each pig has a different resistance and heat tolerance, so you need to pay attention to temperature control measures in the barn, control the environmental temperature in the barn, and strengthen the prevention of heat stroke.

So what measures should we take to control the temperature of the pig house?

Usually the heat insulation of pig houses for individual farming is poor, especially in open pig houses, where the temperature is even more difficult to master. Therefore, open-air pigsties can build pergolas.

Vine plants are also a good helper for heat insulation. Such as wall creepers, loofah vines, can play a role in heat preservation and insulation to the pigsty. Plant some trees such as pines and cypresses to shade the barn from direct sunlight.

In addition, opening doors and windows for ventilation and spraying water to cool down during the cooler times of the day are also effective methods. Including the roof, indoors, you can also sprinkle water vapor on the pig to accelerate the cooling of the pig.

Also, appropriate cooling for pigs; reduce breeding density to help pigs dissipate heat. Piglets 0.3-0.6 square meters per head, breeding pigs 0.8-1.2 square meters per head, gestating sows are kept in a single pen.

If you have enough budget, install a big exhaust fan to ventilate the pig house, or water curtain fan, the effect will be better, probably can reduce 4-5℃.

  • Pig feeding management

Summer period, need to adjust the feed formula. Reduce the energy feed in the diet, can increase the protein feed such as soybean meal, feed more vitamins, minerals rich in green feed. At the same time we also need to adjust the feeding time, the appropriate temperature for the growth of pigs is 15-23 ℃, the temperature is higher than 25-30 ℃, the pig's appetite and feed will be affected and reduced, for this reason, the feeding time to choose a slightly lower temperature time period, such as morning or evening.

Ensure that pigs can drink enough water in summer, to ensure sufficient cool water, is one of the effective measures to prevent summer heat, is conducive to the pig body cooling and can promote feeding. When using an automatic water dispenser, you should clean the water trough and change the water frequently to keep the water clean and hygienic.

Strengthen the management of breeding pigs, the most direct impact of high temperature on breeding pigs is the reduction of libido, delayed estrus, so measures should be taken from various aspects to improve the health and reproductive performance of breeding pigs. In summer, the feed intake of breeding pigs decreases, and it is necessary to increase the nutritional concentration to ensure the nutritional needs of breeding pigs in the feeding condition, and try to avoid feeding, exercising and breeding pigs when the temperature is the highest in a day.

  • Sanitization

There are many mosquitoes in summer, so it is necessary to do a good job of hygiene and sanitization to avoid mosquitoes spreading diseases. The hot weather also breeds the growth and reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms, such as E. coli, streptococcus, staphylococcus and so on. Sterilization is best done in the morning and evening. It avoids the high temperature in the middle of the day, which makes the disinfectant evaporate too quickly.

Attention when disinfecting.

  • a. Don't disinfect the pig house when it is too wet. It is better to wait until the barn is dry.

  • b. Different disinfectants are not recommended to be used together, so as not to increase the toxicity or weaken the disinfection effect. Keep a time interval.

  • c. Don't spread the disinfectant into the dyed feed and drinking water. Don't let the pigs come into direct contact with the disinfectant
