To improve survival rates, do Piglet fostering like this

In large-scale pig farms, the following situations often occur:

  • Insufficient pig lactation

  • High number of piglets, but not enough effective teats

These will undoubtedly cause bad effects on piglet growth. In order to improve the survival rate of piglets, we need to take the measure of piglet fostering in pig farm management. But piglet fostering is not haphazardly carried out, today we will discuss with you some piglet fostering pig farming techniques in pig farm management.

TIPS 1

The age of foster piglets should be the same or similar to that of the mother's piglets, usually not more than 3 days. When a piglet born later in time is fostered in the litter of a pig born earlier, the larger pig in the herd should be selected for fostering; in the opposite case, the smaller pig should be selected for fostering. For piglets born at the same time, it is necessary to pick the big and strong pig to foster. This avoids the big difference of piglets' weight, which will affect the growth and development of the piglets with small weight.

TIPS 2

The sows to be fostered must be high lactation, docile, slightly large, good motherhood, strong disease resistance, high feed intake, and strong nursing performance, and only such sows can nurse good piglets.

TIPS 3

Foster piglets must be fed colostrum. Piglets are more likely to survive if they get enough colostrum. If the piglets do not get colostrum from the birth mother for special reasons, they can get colostrum from the foster mother.

TIPS 4

Make the fostered piglets have the same odor as the piglets in the fostering pen. In order to make fostering smooth, you can apply milk or urine of the foster sow to the foster piglets, or you can mix the piglets for a few hours and put them next to the foster sow at the same time. Another method is to use alcohol wipes around the fosters' nostrils so that they do not recognize the fostered piglets.

TIPS 5

Carefully inspect the piglets and sows before fostering, this is to prevent infectious diseases from being brought in. During this period, you need to observe the lactation situation, if the foster mother does not have enough milk, it may cause the piglets to have diarrhea.

TIPS 6

When piglets are fostered, the operator must not bring in bad smells, this is to minimize stress factors and to be “quiet, light, fast and accurate”.

TIPS 7

Piglet fostering is generally chosen at night, which can reduce the occurrence of stress in foster mothers and piglets.

TIPS 8

Feeders should always observe the piglets, for pigs that will not eat milk, feeding to collaborate to do a good job of piglet lactation, which can improve the survival rate of piglet fostering.

TIPS 9

To ensure the nutritional supply of being sows, feeding is recommended to improve the milk production of sows by corresponding supplements in the feed of sows.

Above is the pig raising technology of piglet fostering in pig farm management. For those pig farms that are smaller and not suitable for foster care, feed additives of milk replacer type can be used, but it should be noted that the newborn piglets should finish colostrum first.

There are more factors to keep in mind about piglet nursery.
